While we all know that our days here are numbered, it’s not something we like to think about on a daily basis. Generally, we spend each day believing that there are plenty more to follow. Without trying to sound too morbid, the reality is that tomorrow is promised to no one.
Although morose, this reminder can actually be a very valuable gift. It is a reminder that can guide us to think about and work towards achieving what is most important to us, before it is too late. The concept of a ‘Bucket List’ is that we create a list of all the things we want to see, do and/or achieve before we ‘kick the bucket’, however, the same concept can be applied to any deadline, for example – things you’d like to achieve before you turn 40.
Establishing What is Important to You
With all of the things there are to do/see/learn/experience in the world, it’s impossible to do it all, which means you will need to determine what is most important to you. When you start thinking about what you want to include on your list, you gain perspective on how you currently spend your time, versus how you’d like to be spending it. This allows you the opportunity to make changes so that you aren’t wasting valuable time and energy on things that really don’t matter. The process of making a bucket list can help you determine what you value most.
Improving Your Focus
When we feel we always have more time, we often think about what we would like to do "one day". Then, real life takes over, and we get caught up in the daily grind. We tend to put "one day" on the back burner and stop working towards achieving our longer term goals. Creating a bucket list encourages us to make a plan for our goals, so that that elusive "one day" finally arrives.
Adding FUN and EXCITEMENT to Your Life
Depending on how extravagant or adventurous your bucket list is, checking things off your list might not happen as frequently as you would like. But don’t let that be a deterrent - planning is half the fun of any great adventure! Researching, watching YouTube videos of others who have been there, done that, and talking with others with similar experiences ensures that you will get the most out of your experience.
Leaving a Legacy
“He lived a full life” they’ll say when you’re gone. And they’d be right. They’ll have the proof, in fact! And be honest, wouldn’t you prefer your legacy be a Bucket List Journal documenting your amazing life, as opposed to a butt imprint on the couch? There are many bucket-listers who chronicle their journey on Instagram or by keeping a blog, but let’s be real, paper journals have a much more sentimental feel, especially after…. well, you know…. after the bucket has been kicked.
